90’S REVIVAL PAYING OFF. CHILDLIKE JOY AND WONDER FINALLY BACK IN STYLE.

July 14, 2016 by Ely Pierce

— LOCAL POP PUNK BAND THE GREATEST GENERATION THROW DOWN ONE HELL OF A SLAMMER ON THE POGS OF OUR LITTLE COMMUNITY WITH THEIR DEBUT EP “GETTING CLOSER”–

LIKE THE WEIRD SOUTHERN DRAWL THAT OCCASIONALLY SNEAKS INTO MY SPEECH, I AM AT TIMES REMINDED THAT I AM A PRODUCT OF MY ENVIRONMENT.

A VERY LUCRATIVE PRODUCT, AS POKEMON GO AS CLEARLY SHOWN. AND JUST LIKE ANY OTHER DEMOGRAPHIC MY SENTIMENTS ARE CONSTANTLY PREYED UPON.

Whether that exploitation is malicious or benign, There are just some things I can’t escape. Old code buried in my programming that I can’t root out. Its our origin story. Its what set us out on our path. The first stone that got thrown down into the first pond and made the first splash.

–SORRY, I’M STILL THINKING ABOUT POGS…

And Comic books, Bicycles, Super Nintendo, choose your own adventure, long summer days running around the neighborhood, coming home lying in bed and feeling electric with momentum. Fanny packs, super thin brightly colored hats that fit poorly. And yes, even Pokemon.

Of course, Its not all about the superficial items and fads. It’s about being a kid. Its about being free. The products that they sold us, anchor those sensations in our minds. It holds them in place. Our little idols simply give us easy access to a time when we were unburdened by responsibility. When we had no masters. And served no gods.

LIKE PRODIGAL SONS WE PERFORM OUR DUTIFUL DANCE. NINTENDO IS NOT OUR RELIGION THO, YOUTH IS.

IS IT A LITTLE ABSURD TO ME THAT THESE FADS ARE ALREADY BECOMING POPULAR AGAIN?

Am I occasionally threatened by my own ever advancing irrelevancy? Sure, Especially when most the kids jumpin on these wagons weren’t even old enough to jerk off in the 90’s. And if you weren’t jerking off in the 90’s… What the fuck were you doing??

AND THAT’S WHY I LIKE THE GREATEST GENERATION’S “GETTING CLOSER”

…IT MADE ME THINK OF MY STORIED CAREER IN MASTURBATION.

I’M JOKING OF COURSE.

WELL, IT DID REMIND ME OF JERKING OFF… BUT ONLY THE BEST PART OF JERKING OFF.

…it also reminded me of the best parts of the late 90’s/2000’s era melodic punk scene. the part that wasn’t trying to be anything. was just sort of an amalgamation of post hardcore and pop punk. That weird scratchy feedback soaring over every song. Guitar Melodies taut and strung so tight they cut thru the mix and almost hurt to focus on.

THIS EP PUT THE BIGGEST, DUMBEST GRIN ON MY FACE.

And the best, warm little tingling in my tummy. This legitimately got me excited.

The Greatest Generation happily trod down a path laid down years ago by bands like Latterman and Spraynard. Only, trading in jaunty traditional sing-alongs for big open hooks, reminiscent of modern pop punk counterparts, The Story So Far. From the dual shouted/gang vocals of “5 hours” to the treble broad harmonies and gritty live vibe of its closing track “See You Around”. I had a lot of fun with this one. The production only further lending itself to its appeal. Pulling back from big, polished, guitars. Springs locals and pop punk vets Max Fancy Barksdale and Duncan Slack(…coolest names of all time) of Why They Fight and newly christened studio, Groom Lake Projects. Have pooled their talents in recording this piece and pulled off a delicate balance of lo-fi fuzz and modern shine without sounding put-on or overreaching for niche value.

I’M EXCITED FOR THIS MATERIAL BECAUSE I WAS PLEASANTLY SURPRISED BY IT.

BUT I’M JUST AS EXCITED THAT THEY’RE YOUNG AS FUCK AND ALREADY KILLIN IT.

THERE’S HUGE POTENTIAL FOR THIS SOUND. AND WITH OUR SUPPORT THEY’LL CONTINUE TO REFINE AND MASTER IT.
